I work with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Marine Mammal Lab and lead multispectral aerial surveys for seals and polar bears in the Arctic. Our surveys apply deep learning algorithms (YOLO) to multispectral aerial imagery in real time to improve the accuracy and efficiency of large scale aerial surveys. We use long wavelength infrared imagery to detection animal "hot spots" on the sea ice and color imagery for species classification. Talk to me if you have ideas/experience regarding image fusion, polar bear detection, or are sitting on a stash of aerial images of polar bears on ice or snow! Also interested in talking with folks about edge computing in extreme environments and hardware miniaturization.
